Fixin' to get a bath

Fixin' to get a bath

Well, I didn't really wash it . . . . .I just used the hot water pressure washer at work to remove some of the nastiness that had accumulated over the past 7 to 8 years. A real scrubbing will come later.

I have her home now, but not without some drama. While the 280,000 mile Z24 ran great and idled perfectly while at my dad's house, some problems popped up on the trip to my house.. . . It was minor. . . A little sputter or hesitation, but, after all. . . . It was still running on 8 year-old gasoline. The real issue came after I topped-off the tank with some fresh gasoline. I hadn't driven a block when it sputtered really hard and just died. I finally got it running again and stopped at NAPA before going back home. When I tried to leave NAPA, the truck just would not start. I installed the new fuel filter that I had just purchased, thinking that might help, but to no avail . . ..still nothing.
I then decided to check all of the electical connections related to the ignition. The fuse seemed a bit loose so I devised a way to tighten the connections. SUCCESS!

It will now start and idle perfectly (for the most part), but has the tendency to stumble whenever I open up the throttle a little. My thought is that I dislodged a bunch of old sludge, varnish, and debris in the tank as drove the truck home and even more whenever I put more gasoline in the tank. Maybe I'll take it out and clean it up or maybe I'll just get a new fuel tank

Draining the gasoline from the SUV's fuel tank

Draining the gasoline from the SUV's fuel tank

Dealing with gasoline in a diesal vehicle is a big deal. The manager of Selva Verde Lodge very generously talked to the service station manager and got her to agree to fix the problem at no charge to us, and to do it right away. Amazingly helpful - particularly since we had already checked out of the Lodge that morning.

To fix the vehicle, one has to completely drain the fuel tank and fuel lines and replace the fuel filter with a new one. To completely drain the fuel tank, one has to take it off the vehicle. The three very young, but very impressively competent and friendly mechanics with their ratchet set and a mini-lift did just that quickly and efficiently -- though the whole process still took more than two hours to complete. Here they have the fuel tank on the right and they are trying to syphon off some of the remaining gasoline. Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.
